Brewing Chinook ’85, A Black IPA

For my birthday this year I was gifted this lovely poster from the Single Hop Project. Well, to celebrate the poster and the great year 1985, I decided to order a pound of Ontario grown Chinook hops from Clear Valley Hops and to brew up a American Black Ale (Black IPA).

Here’s the plan:

13.00 lb Maris Otter 89.3 %
1.00 lb Carahell 7.1 %
0.50 lb Carafa Special III 3.6 % (this is basically a colouring agent)

Single Infusion, 152F, 60 minutes. 90 minute boil.

28.00 g Chinook [13.00 %] – Boil 60.0 min 35.9 IBUs
42.00 g Chinook [13.00 %] – Boil 15.0 min 26.7 IBUs
42.00 g Chinook [13.00 %] – Boil 5.0 min 10.7 IBUs
55.00 g Chinook [13.00 %] – Boil 0.0 min 0.0 IBUs
111.00 g Chinook [13.00 %] – Dry Hop 3 Days 0.0 IBUs

I was Shooting for a 20L batch, 70 IBU, and around 1.070 OG. Fermenting out with US-05 to around 1.015 for about a 7.2% Black IPA. I did get around 20L, with about 16L ending up being bottled due to some hop losses.

Lots of fresh hops.

Lots of fresh hops.

Update: Bottled this beer early December. It should be ready to try when I get home from Newfoundland.
